[ ... Well, that doesn't sit well with him. Kitsuno needs to receive a ton of presents today, then. Maybe he'll call Riou and Jyuto after this, ask them to get something special for Kitsuno since it's her birthday, too. Briefly, he wonders if she knows Sasara. . . maybe that damn clown can get her something, too. ]
Ah... I mean, the stuff you make's always good. It just keeps getting better, yeah?
[ A pause, and he just answers her next question as normally as possible. He's not thinking anything of it right now. ]
Special? Nah. I was at work this mornin', but that's all I gotta do today. I was thinkin' of doin' the laundry...
Mm! A princess usually gives on her day of birth... so we'd have festivals through the land. And everyone could partake in our gardens for delicacies they couldn't get elsewhere. Would that I could show you my home...
[ She suddenly pauses, realizing how long it's been since she's been away from home, but she doesn't let it show. Today is a happy day! ]
A-ah. I'd have expected you to have been busy with dates today. Would you believe my Mitsu has one today? He met a pretty fox friend here and wanted to take flowers and berries to them. I was going to accompany him. It might be a little silly, but... would you like to come along?
What— [ At first, he's embarrassed, but realises that maybe it's a cultural thing. Is Kitsuno still talking about friendly dates when she mentions "dates"? He's not sure... but he wants to make himself clear. ] I don't— I ain't like that, Kitsuno.
[ Being busy with dates and... having a lot of dates in the first place... He knows he mentioned this world makes it difficult to date normally, but he's gone on a few dates before. One was even with her! Even then, those dates weren't signs of commitment. If he committed to someone, then that person would be stuck with him. He's— He doesn't think he's worth it. ]
I'm cool with tagging along, sure. Where do I meet you?
I don't mean it badly... you're a wonderful person, Samatoki. Anyone would be lucky to spend some more time with you. I always have fun with you around, no matter what we do.
[ Dates or no dates. She's just happy with her friends and seeing them smile, but Samatoki, especially—
She quickly pushes that thought aside, not wanting to make things awkward. ]
Ah, anyway... the groves. Around the spring flowers... it's marked. We could meet at the fountain there? That's where Mitsu's date is! It's a pretty white fox friend. He's been so charmed, too. He's feeling a bit nervous, though. Maybe you could cheer him on?
[ Though that next part makes her eyes widen and she sits up. ]
Split... ah. That's right, we'll need to give them some privacy.
[ She's suddenly realizing they will be alone, and her face goes red. Why is she like this. The thought of it is making her happy and nervous, and she doesn't want to say something that'll push Samatoki away.
But spending time with him... she wants to. This is a confusing, but pleasant feeling for her. ]
Oh, we could go to... I saw it at Prismaplace. It's called "Kar-ao-ke"? People sing there! And I've heard people do that thing there too... rapping! The way you and Riou-san and Iruma-san do. In fact, they were having a performance contest in the evenings. Would you like to do that? They have snacks and this delicious parfait they only give to the people with the top score for that period!
[ She's been eyeing that parfait for a while, but she doesn't rap, and the songs they have aren't anything she'd sing but she's been listening to some! ]
[ Sounds fun, really. Samatoki's not one for that kind of thing, but it seems fun if it's with Kitsuno. Plus, he'll give her what she wants— it's her birthday, after all. ]
[ Samatoki's always doing such nice things for her, so she feels a bit guilty because of her crush. Maybe she's being a little selfish, but... it's also spending time with someone she cares a lot for and making sure he's happy too. So... ]
We could do something you like, too, you know. But if we do win that parfait... I know! I'll do something for you! It's only fair!
Mm! I'll see you at the groves at the fourth hour, then! See you soon, Samatoki!
[ ... and now for the frightening bit: WHAT DOES SHE WEAR well... she'll figure it out!! She's seeing Samatoki, and helping Mitsu with his date!! There's work to be done!! ]
Samatoki tries not to be late. It's an impromptu plan, so he has to rush a little. He doesn't have a lot of time to fix his hair, so he just grabs some gel to slick his hair back instead of let it be its usual fluff. He doesn't wear anything special either, just a usual blue hawaiian shirt (the one with spiders), pants, and shoes. He does show up just on time, but he also looks TIRED AS FUCK.. He tried to be there on time for Mitsu's date :(!!! ]
But she does wear something simple (it's not like she can afford much else) but she has been very, very slowly trying to look a little less... old-fashioned. Which means bothering her colleagues at work, and ending up with the suggestion of wearing his colours (yes, Samatoki, he's been gossiped about even though Kitsuno's tried to be subtle!!) — but with a dash of her own, so obviously there will be some red adornments there.
It's nothing out of the ordinary, but she does want to give a good appearance- to Mitsu's local fox date, and Samatoki. It's not like she'll show up with a half-assed appearance for someone she cares about, so when Samatoki shows up, he'll find Kitsuno seated at the edge of the fountain, Mitsu on her lap and the little fox pacing nervously.
He looks unsettled, but then he sees Samatoki and chirps up at him, jumping off Kitsuno's lap and running to him to circle around his legs with his tail and then stepping back as he jumps up to Kitsuno's side so that Samatoki can sit next to her once she sits. She stands to greet him, herself. ]
Fair eve, Samatoki.
[ She greets, though she does give his appearance a concerned look... ]
Oh... I hope I didn't make you rush. Please, sit... Mitsu and I got here early.
[ Mitsu seems to be side-eyeing her as though asking "What did you say?!" but he does give Samatoki a slightly helpless look before circling around behind Kitsuno and looking up at him with a few chirps. Kitsuno blinks, before looking up at Samatoki. ]
... he's saying he doesn't usually need assistance, but... some modern ways confuse him and- Mitsu!
[ She goes a little red, before murmuring- ]
- he says I'm not as informed as you would be, so he'll count on you for this.
[ He actually says hi to Mitsu first—he seems excited that Samatoki is around, after all. Then he gives a smile and a nod to Kitsuno. ]
S'fine, glad I made it on time. [ He honestly would hate to keep Kitsuno waiting. Making a girl wait is very, very rude, after all. Samatoki's not rude to women. Though he does let out a chuckle at what Kitsuno says (translates). It's... true. She thought dating was something friendly— sure you could go on friendly dates, but it's more of a word used for romance, after all. ]
[ Mitsu looks as amused as a fox can look, mostly because even he knows it's hard to get Kitsuno to actually react at times. Then again, she doesn't have the kind of hang-ups most humans do.
But he does pad forward before circling around in front of them and letting out a few chirps that Kitsuno listens to and smiles. ]
He wants to know if it's normal to be this excited about someone he's only known a few months. He's very popular back home even among the wolves and cats!
[ That last part is obviously her— because Mitsu does give her a look again, and she gives a sheepish chuckle, before looking up at Samatoki. ]
... and he wants to know what you'd do if you liked someone in a place like this. Because he's rather happy despite himself, but he thinks his interest is nervous, and he wants them to feel happy for as long as he's here, too.
[ Something she'd thought about, and agrees with Mitsu about. They should just enjoy the time they have here, right? But some people seem to be very nervous about doing so out of fear they'll lose it. ]
'course it's normal! [ He gives the fox a pat on the head. ] You get excited for food, an' it's only been cooked for a few minutes, right?
[ Why is that his comparison? Anyway, he takes a seat next to Kitsuno and laughs. The second question's a little difficult to answer because he tries not to like someone too much. He's not allowed to have fun— it's a promise he's made to himself because he doesn't want to become to happy without achieving what he needs to do. ]
I dunno, but I guess it's important to live in the now, right? You're gonna be upset and regret a lotta things if you don't take risks. Who knows what could happen?
[ His eyes briefly drift to meet Kitsuno's. He's sort of saying the same thing to her too, in case she wanted an answer, personally. ]
[ For Mitsu, that explanation is actually perfect, and his ears lift up happily as Samatoki pats his head. Kitsuno reaches over to smooth down the fur on his back, fragrant like hers, though as she listens to Samatoki talk, her own expression softens.
( Live in the now, is it...? )
Mitsu, on the other hand, bumps his head up against Samatoki's for more headpets, letting out a few more chirping noises, and Kitsuno just ends up staring at her friend's pretty red eyes when he looks at her. She can't help but think of them being like the red jewels they'd sneak to fish out from the lake, and it isn't until Mitsu gives her a whack with his tail that she blinks and tries to focus on what he's saying.
Cheeks flushing slightly, she says- ]
He says... "You should take your own advice too, tough guy."
[ As the words leave her mouth, she quickly moves her hand to cover it, though Mitsu lets out a little foxy chuckle, looking smug at making her talk so boldly. He just wiggles his ears at Samatoki, which makes Kitsuno puff her cheeks. ]
Now he's teasing. But, he is content with your reassurance. And wants to thank you.
[ Mitsu suddenly perks up jumping off the fountain edge and running forward where, a slightly larger fox than him, with white fur, shyly steps on in. It's clearly an Amegaharan fox, but they seem shy and carrying some flowers in their mouth for Mitsu- a bunch of orchids. Kitsuno smiles and watches as they bump heads and grab some flowers each from the stacks, though Mitsu races back towards Samatoki to drop a purple-blue orchid and a red one in his lap and rubs himself around his leg before scampering off to join his companion, and Kitsuno smiles to herself as she watches them leave. ]
I think he'd already made up his mind, and just wanted to reaffirm it with you.
[ She glances at the flowers on his lap and picks them up, shifting closer to carefully set them against his shirt. If there's a pocket, she'll arrange them in a way they're displayed, before lifting her gaze up at him, and settling back. ]
Though it sounds like you've made your mind up about some things too. Is there something you've ever regretted not doing?
[ Samatoki's forehead creases and he looks at Mitsu a little funny at the response Kitsuno so nicely translates for them both. THE HELL IS THIS CHEEKY FOX SAYING!!! ]
I got no idea what he's talkin' about!
[ He can't be happy. He doesn't deserve it!! >:( Mitsu you need to learn.
But ah. He wants to say more, like tell Mitsu off and all, but it seems his date has arrived! The little flower that's dropped on his lap gets a weird look at first, partly because he's still a little ticked off, but he cools down immediately. The growl in his throat turns into a chuckle when he realises it was probably a thank you. Before he could pick it up, though, Kitsuno is already at it and putting it in the pocket of his shirt.
... Not what he was thinking, but— ]
Somethin' I've regretted not doin'... [ There's not much, really, but... if he wanted to answer her truthfully? ] Guess it would've been to take care of my mom better.
She died, you know. Killed herself an' all.
[ He plucks the orchid from his pocket and looks at it, twirling the stem between his fingers as he speaks. His voice is soft, the usual roughness to it gone. It's relatively easy for Samatoki to be himself without the usual toughness he puts up when he trusts a person. There's not much he knows about Kitsuno, but the two of them are learning more and more about one another. He thinks... being honest about what happened with his family is okay. ]
[ There are still a few human social norms she's trying to understand— despite her appearance and actions, she is still a fox— a spiritkind, which humans easily call demonic. In some ways that's what she is— but it doesn't mean she can't try and understand. She has been, for the last few months that she's been here.
While Samatoki's reactions are amusing at Mitsu, what he says next makes her expression soften and gaze grow troubled. Out of politeness, she's kept herself from glancing into Samatoki's past— that and she doesn't have the same power she does back home, anyway.
She slides closer, tilting her head as she watches him, wondering... She decides to ask him about him, if he's answering. ]
I'm sorry she left you. And your sister... were you very young when it happened?
[ Her fathers would never give up like that— not unless influenced. She has to wonder... ]
I was in high school. [ Headcanon time ] My dad was messed up and had issues. Hurt us all a lot. Mom got fed up and killed him, then herself.
[ There's a pause there, and he looks at his hands. It can't be seen, but he's seen his fair share of blood, too. He talks a big game about killing people, doing it as part of his job. It's not the best job in the world, and Samatoki would be the biggest liar in the world if he said this was what he wanted to do growing up.
He had bigger dreams back then, when he was younger. All that had to stop when his family shrunk. He had to give those dreams up to give Nemu a future. It's unfortunate how her future was formed because of crime and underground dealings since Samatoki joined the yakuza at an early age.
... Does he blame himself? Hell no, but he wishes he could have been the one to kill his father instead. Maybe then, things would be different. His mom wouldn't have—
His hands ball into fists, clenches them twice as his brows furrow. The anger he's feeling is palpable from the aura he gives off, but he's somehow maintaining a straight face. When his red eyes flicker over to meet Kitsuno's, though, it's as if he can turn back time. He's reliving the memory. ]
[ The thought of family hurting each other to get ahead isn't alien to her- though that wasn't the case of her own. Her fathers love her and her brothers immensely, so much that they've defied the lord of the underworld for her. And now he...
She lets her thoughts trail off before she senses how worked up Samatoki is getting, but she doesn't regret asking him. She wonders if he's gotten to tell anyone at all, or if he's been holding it all in... though it's chilling when he looks at her and says that. She's quiet, but-
Her gaze softens after a while and she moves her hands over his, as though hoping he'll be soothed if she does. It's a stray hope, and she wonders how to do it, but after a moment, she lowers her head, lifting his hand between their bodies and holding it for a bit. ]
You were a child. That wasn't something you could ever foresee.
[ And somehow, because of it, Samatoki's personality and the choices he's making seem to make sense. ]
You've had to do things no child should have... all because of selfish choices from those that ought to have protected you.
[ She sighs, moving her face close to gently kiss the back of his hand. ]
But your hands- they aren't a murderer's hands, Samatoki. They're a protector's. You make those around you feel safe. Don't ever lose that.
[ Her words and voice remain soft, but if it can help unburden him, even a little, she wants to be able to do it for him. ]
Especially for those you're doing this for. No one wants to see their protectors forsaking their own happiness, too.
[ She'd be sad if her brothers weren't getting their due happiness, all because they wanted to keep her safe. ]
[ Samatoki isn't necessarily soothed by the action, but it does make him realise that he's sharing a little too much. He's probably making her uncomfortable with such a story. ]
A protector's, huh...
[ He's never considered it that way. Growing up, joining the yakuza and doing what he did to get where he is now, they were done with consent. He knew what he was getting into. Sure, it was to give his sister a better life... but he wouldn't call himself a protector.
Especially after what happened to Nemu. ]
I dunno, Kitsuno. [ He chortles, brows furrowed, but he's forcing himself to smile. ] Anyway, you sure this is what you should be listenin' to on Valentine's Day? C'mon, we should get goin'.
[ That's enough chatter about his stupid life for now. He is on his feet before Kitsuno can even respond. ]
[ She doesn't want him closing up on her, especially if this is something he's held in for so long. Regardless of her naïveté, she's still a princess back home. It's why it's so important for her to listen and learn.
Her hand gives his a squeeze as she stands up with him, her head lowered for a bit. ]
I don't know much about humans beyond what little I've seen at home and what I've encountered here. But when it's coming from you, I— I want to know.
[ She feels a little sheepish admitting that; after all, he has friends who have better understanding, and are better able to help him. But the thought of not being useful grates on her. Especially to someone she calls her friend. And especially to someone she feels the way she does for.
She inhales and exhales before stepping up next to him. ]
Because you're important to me. If all I can do is listen, I'll listen. But if I can give you something at all that helps... I want to. So please... tell me whatever you need to, even if it feels unimportant. I'll listen. And I'll try and help.
[ She smiles weakly. ]
Even a protector needs somewhere to place his burdens, right?
[ Her words are soft, though she ends up chuckling a bit. ]
This is a bit serious, isn't it? Forgive me. I was kept in isolation for so long that it seems I keep forgetting how to "cut loose" as they say here. But... we can't ignore the bad, sometimes. And it's good to unburden our minds of it.
[ She smiles as she looks up, hopeful! ]
How about this? I'll tell you of my burdens if I have any if you keep telling me yours! And we'll work through them together! For our sakes, and for those we want to help!
[ Samatoki stays silent for a while, standing up with Kitsuno by his side. He's listening, just not really sure what to say or how to respond to these things Kitsuno says. It's not that he's closing off on her, or that he's ungrateful for the companionship she brings, but. . . ultimately, it's him who has to do something about his problems, not anyone else.
He's learned to rely on people— he does, of course. That's why he's not against being in teams. That's why it hurt so much when Sasara betrayed him, and then Ichiro. The trust he places in people is almost sacred now, because he still knows how to do it despite all the heartbreaks he's experienced in the past.
These people now, whether it's Mad Trigger Crew, Kitsuno, or the other people whom he's befriended here. They're all important. He trusts them. . . And Kitsuno saying she wants to help. . . maybe he should let these people do that, huh? What Kitsuno offers as an exchange gets him to laugh a little, and he can't help but let go of Kitsuno's hand only so he can pull her in for a hug. ]
[ Ah. She lets out a small surprised sound when she's pulled into a hug, her arms going against his chest as she savours the feeling of being held by Samatoki. She knows- she ought to be more reserved... after all, he is a human, and eventually they'll leave this place. She may never even see him or recall him once she does.
But it's okay to be selfish once in a while, isn't it? Or maybe...
She pauses, pushing her forehead against his chest for a bit, still able to make out his heartbeat this way. Her own fragrance pulses lightly, not letting that thought continue. ]
Then- I suppose I should hug you more often, if it does.
[ She'd do that happily for him. The thought of why makes her feel a tight clench in her chest, but... she doesn't want to let go of it, even if she's sure it won't be returned the same way. But that's why-
That's why she needs to protect him, too. ]
Samatoki, I...
[ She begins, before quickly convincing herself otherwise. Quickly punctuating it with a laugh, she draws her head back to look at him with a bright smile. ]
Let's go get that parfait, and see you win the rap rankings! I'll give you a reward for winning when you do!
[ When he does. She believes in him. Moving to take his hand and thread her fingers with him, she tugs him to get him going! ]
Come on, let's go!
[ If this is the way things will be, then that's how they'll be. Maybe one day she'll be honest with him, but...
Until that time, she's happy things are like this too. ]

Is there something you've ever regretted not doing?
cw suicide

Do you blame yourself, Samatoki? For her choice?

Headcanon time] My dad was messed up and had issues. Hurt us all a lot. Mom got fed up and killed him, then herself.[ There's a pause there, and he looks at his hands.
I should've done it.

... This is enough for me. Thanks, Kitsuno.
