BACKGROUND: Samatoki on the Hypnosis Mic wiki. If that's not enough, here is a brief explanation of Samatoki's involvement in the media until the canon point he will be taken from:
Samatoki belonged to a family of 4. He is the first amongst the Aohitsugi siblings and is very close to his younger sister, Nemu. They, along with their mother, were victims of domestic violence thanks to their father. At some point, Samatoki's mother killed his father and then killed herself. It's because of this particular incident that Samatoki vowed to never physically hurt a woman.
Being orphaned, Samatoki needed a way for he and Nemu to survive. He eventually joined the yakuza and rose in the ranks. It's sometime during this period that the Party of Words (a group of women tired of men and their violence) overthrows the Japanese government and replaces the Prime Minister with their Leader. Women and men are then separated. While men live in various cities ("divisions"), the women live in the Chuuoku District. It is in Chuuoku that territory battles take placeโbasically rap battles where division members use Hypnosis Mic to fight rather than using weapons. The women of Chuuoku treat territory battles as a form of entertainment.
Two years prior to the current Hypnosis Mic timeline was a rap group called The Dirty Dawg ("TDD") along with Ichiro Yamada, Ramuda Amemura, and Jakurai Jinguji. Samatoki was one of its members, but due to some differences between the team, they disbanded and went on to form their own divisions. Ichiro and Samatoki become enemies, hating each other to the core. From what's provided by canon thus far, their ideals clashed. Even though Samatoki had vowed to never hit a woman, he hates the government run by women and wants to bring equality back in his own way.
Samatoki ends up creating Mad Trigger Crew ("MTC"), a group based in Yokohama and is joined by one of the cops he constantly meets on his job, Jyuto Iruma. Later on, once territory battles near, they recruit Riou Mason Busujima.
MTC moves onto the finals after beating Buster Bros!!!, but they lose to Shinjuku Division's Matenrou. After a day after the match, Samatoki calls Jyuto and Riou over to his room for a cup of coffee and to thank them for their participation.
PERSONALITY:
Former member of the legendary rap group The Dirty Dawg, Samatoki Aohitsugi goes by the MC moniker "Mr.Hc", where the Hc stands for "hardcore".
Staying true to the name he goes by, Samatoki is a tough guy. He has a lot of pride in himself and doesn't allow anybody to step on him. Respect is particularly important to him. He gets mad when he's called "Samatoki" by someone younger than he is, demanding to be called "Samatoki-san". People who are inferior to him should speak to him with respect as he is superior, and he uses this as a reason for bashing someone's head into the wall. He even refers to himself as "Samatoki-sama" in his solo song and uses the pronoun "ore-sama" rather than just "ore".
It probably wouldn't come as a surprise, but Samatoki Aohitsugi is a man who has a short fuse. A slight show of disobedience gets him to growl and snarl, calling him by his name with no honourific attached gets his blood boiling and the violence in him to come out. Basically, there are a lot of things that trigger Samatoki to get angry. His volume goes up as the level of his anger rises. He's strangled some of his men before and even tried to hurt his own teammate (Jyuto, specifically) because they wouldn't do as he says. This is just the kind of guy that he is: if his command isn't fulfilled, then someone will get hurt. He's an emblem of authority and it's why the people around him must follow him.
In line with Samatoki's constant foul mood, he has the tendency to become violent. Being named Yokohama's Mad Dog is fitting, because apart from him always being mad, he's constantly sent in a frenzy of violence. One of the ways he lets off steam when he's impatient or pressured is by using his Hypnosis Mic to rap and hurt someone. When aggravated, his go-to saying always has something to do with beating somebody up, killing them, or "don't be sorry if you die". This particular trait of his relates to the effects of Hypnosis Mic, too, as the device mirrors one's soul in a manner of speaking. Whenever Samatoki raps, it deals strong mental and physical damage to his target, compared to effects of other rappers such as healing or providing support.
Representing Yokohama Division, his style of rapping is inspired by West Coast Gangster rap. It makes sense for them to do so when Samatoki is part of the yakuza. At the same time, it reflects on Samatoki's way of life. He lives a life of crime and has been arrested countless times that he doesn't even bat an eyelash anymore whenever it happens. In his solo song, he even claims to take money, power, women, and alcohol just because he likes it. (One thing Samatoki won't delve in is drugs, however, because Jyuto's family history and hostility towards them.)
Samatoki alone is a formidable force, whether he's fighting with his fists or with his words. Because of his impulsiveness, he's somebody who constantly needs to be put on a leash, and is at one point, even called a "beast". He doesn't think much, letting his emotions take the lead. It's why he's always mad, violent, and needs to be controlled. In most cases, Samatoki has to be physically restrained, whether it's being carried away from the person he's about to beat up, or somebody stepping in and trying to stop Samatoki before anything happens. He even says "You play mind games, I'm all about action" in one of his verses, and the line is responded with "Single-minded people deserve to be controlled". (Apart from interpreting said line as Samatoki being impulsive, it can also be said that Samatoki doesn't think much and he can be dumb.)
Despite his tough exterior, Samatoki is still someone capable of feeling emotion. He cares for his sister a lot to the point that he's even called a "siscon" (somebody with a sister complex). He denies this, but says Nemu is "cute as hell" as a retort, which isn't a good one as it gives Ichiro more ammo against him. He does have a soft spot for Nemu, even putting work aside because he wants to celebrate her birthday with no interruptions. He wants to protect Nemu as best as he can and bringing her up tends to get him to either calm down or make him angrier.
He considers MTC as his comrades and is loyal to them, but at the same time, he expects loyalty from his members, as well. Being teammates means he respects and trusts them, and even though Samatoki can sometimes threaten Jyuto with violence, he would never actually do anything to harm either of them. After losing to Matenrou, he doesn't even get mad and instead admits that he's grateful to both Jyuto and Riou for being there because he wouldn't be where he is now without them.
When it comes to the people he cares about, he's a little less ruthless. He gives Nemu special treatment. He even did a lot of squats so he could get hungry and eat whatever Riou prepared, because he normally doesn't want to eat Riou's cooking since he feeds them spiders and rats and whatever else he can find in the wild. At the end of the day, the Mad Dog can be tamed.
Samatoki doesn't like to disappoint or hurt the feelings of people he cares forโhis loyalty truly goes far and wide, and breaking his trust would hurt him so much that forgiveness is something he can't even begin to consider. All in all, as somebody whose motto is "Life is not fair", he has experienced being on the receiving end of hypocritical behaviour and thus hates hypocrites. A lot of his negative experiences has shaped who he is today, and he intends to use these experiences as stepping stones in order to overthrow the current government of Japan.
